A Week Fit For “A KING!”

February 21, 2010

This week in 1956, a song entered the national top 100 at #68.

Just two weeks later, it would hit #1 in the country and STAY there for 8 weeks.

The song? It was ELVIS’ very first entry into the Top 100 AND also his very first national chart topper: “Heartbreak Hotel.”

It was a tune written by Hoyt Axton’s mother, Mae, with lyrics by a Nashville steel guitar player named Tommy Durden, who was once a dishwasher repairman!

Elvis would go on to score 17 more #1’s in his super super mega super duper star career, along with countless other Top Ten Hits.

Don’t forget, KRTH 101 brings you “Elvis Only” every Sunday night at midnight!
